On Friday, January 19, POETRY SLAM will provide a free platform for sharing and enjoying poems. The Jesuits’ College of Funchal will host the event for those who wish to listen to poetry or, with more courage, for those who want to share their own verses or stanzas.
POETRY SLAM events are well-known in Canada, Austria, Germany, and many countries. Katharina Bacher, a volunteer from Austria working at THE UNIVERSITY OF MADEIRA STUDENTS’ UNION, explains that POETRY SLAM “is an event, a platform, a stage, and a community.” The initiative is open to all who “want to perform and share what they desire.” For the public, it offers an opportunity to relish a relaxed atmosphere infused with poetry.

POETRY SLAM boasts a long history worldwide, including world, continental, and national championships, even in Portugal. “I am sure there are great writers on the island, and many people write poems or other types of texts and keep them hidden,” says Katharina Bacher. “I want to empower people to share their words, which often help others, unite people, and can even help you to liberate yourself.”
Poets compete in rounds of poetry performances, each lasting up to 5 minutes. During their performances, poets must recite original material they have created themselves, without the use of props or costumes. The audience assigns scores ranging from 1 to 5 after each performance, which are then totaled to determine the final scores. POETRY SLAM promotes an environment of respect and inclusion, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for diverse voices and styles.
