Vinda da Polónia, Eryka Łakomy (cujo apelido se pronuncia “Uacómi”, na nossa língua) é uma jovem voluntária que colabora com a ACADÉMICA DA MADEIRA, no programa HERANÇA MADEIRENSE (ou MADEIRAN HERITAGE, em Inglês), que tem como propósito divulgar o património da Região, angariando fundos que são aplicados em programas de apoio aos estudantes universitários.
Eryka chegou em janeiro trabalha diariamente no Colégio dos Jesuítas, como guia de visitas pelo centro histórico do Funchal e na promoção das iniciativas culturais da ACADÉMICA, ao abrigo do Corpo Europeu de Solidariedade, uma das vertentes do programa ERASMUS+.
I found this project organized by European Solidarity Corpus completely by accident while scrolling in the evening after a long day at work. As a 25 yo, independent woman, I wanted to change something in my life. I knew I needed to see more sun in my life, make more international friendships, travel and living by the sea. The heading of the project offer: “Go volunteer on the island of eternal spring – Madeira” was enough to decide to go.
Interessada na oferta de voluntariado promovida na ACADÉMICA, submeteu a sua candidatura, acabando por ser selecionada entre dezenas de jovens de toda a União Europeia. Deixou a sua vida em suspenso no seu país e abraçou esta aventura por meio ano, integrando um equipa multinacional formada por outros jovens de origens alemã, austríaca, francesa, holandesa, grega e, claro, portuguesa.
I sent an application and two weeks later I received information about acceptance. I quit my job, moved out of my apartment, hugged my whole family, packed my bags and left Poland for 6 months for new experiences.
As I was landing, I was moved by the beautiful view: landscapes, mountains, greenery, ocean. The coordinator picked me up from the airport and took me to the residence. I won’t say that.. at the beginning I experienced a bit of a shock, because I went from living alone to a three-person room and had to share spaces with about 10 people, but after 2/3 days I got used to the conditions and made friends with my new, wonderful, French roommates.
Apesar de ser uma das mais recentes membros da equipa de voluntários da ACADÉMICA, já integrou várias inciativas no âmbito do seu trabalho voluntário e tem experimentado o que de melhor a nossa Região pode oferecer a um jovem,
I don’t even know when the first month passed. Trainings, trips, guided tours, picnics, chilling at the beach, hiking, Fado concert, Slam poetry, jam session, restaurants, dancing and meetings with amazing people. From the very beginning of my arrival I felt taken care of. Because all the volunteers are smiling, friendly and willing to do various activities even after work, I was not bored. Sometimes I even felt tired of constant meetings.
Thanks to the training, I feel that I know more about Madeira and Funchal than about where I come from. Studying about the island was so interesting that I even found out that the Polish singer Edyta Gorniak shot a music video for “Teraz – tu” here. Every day something surprises me, every day I learn something new about the city, every day I step out of my comfort zone.
Além de todas as experiências que tem tido, esta jovem voluntária tem desenvolvido competências pessoais e profissionais que lhe serão úteis de futuro, mesmo que não na sua carreira não volta a desempenhar as tarefas que tem realizado no Funchal.
Work and friends are one thing, but what’s going on inside me is another. Many friends told me that you have to be brave to go abroad. In volunteering project everything is organized, so you can have peace of mind. But still you have to be brave. This one-month journey taught me how to overcome my fears (e.g. that I might be carried away by a wave), how to set and respect people boundaries, how to meet new people in a new place, and how to not be afraid of speaking English (because that’s the only way I can communicate with anyone).
Volunteering is more than just training and guiding tourists for a few hours a day. Volunteering also allows you to discover yourself. I recommend it to everyone, whether it’s a gap year or as in my case, a spontaneous decision to quit job.
Além da sua vertente académica, que apoia a mobilidade para estudar e estagiar dentro da União Europeia, o programa ERASMUS+, através do Corpo Europeu de Solidariedade permite aos jovens até aos 30 anos realizar Projetos de Solidariedade e Projetos de Voluntariado. É nesta segunda categoria que o projeto de Eryka Łakomy e dos seus colegas estrangeiros a colaborar com a ACADÉMICA se enquandra.
Qualquer jovem entre os 18 e os 30 anos pode apresentar candidatura a qualquer programa de trabalho voluntário, desenvolvido por milhares de instituições nos mais diversos países da União Europeia, entre dois meses a um ano. Cada jovem a realizar um Projeto de Voluntariado beneficia de acomodações, um fundo de alimentação e de uma bolsa designada “pocket money” mensal.
