The journey here is always full of action, but for an island paradise, it is definitely worth it.
After an unexpected night in Gran Canaria, the pilot said that if we could not land then, we would have to fly back to Germany. I have never heard so many people cheer on a plane as when we finally landed in Madeira.
I have now been in Funchal for 3 weeks, helping the university as a photographer. My daily life is full of different events. Thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, I can stay here for 5 weeks to improve my English and get to know new cultures.
Queres ter uma experiência europeia com as despesas pagas?
O projeto “Take action in Katowice” é promovido pela organização polaca Bona Fides Association. Desenhado para oito jovens, restam três vagas para uma experiência financiada, de 12 meses, na Polónia.
The European Union and Austria
On the 26th of May, the people of my country, Austria, will be going to the polls and electing the members
On my first day, I met the other volunteers and was immediately welcomed into their group of friends. Since then, we have spent almost every day together. So, you are in a foreign country, without speaking a single word of Portuguese, and you become friends with a group of French people.
Trips to the north, quiet evenings at the beach, or having a poncha in Rua de Santa Maria. I really like the painted doors because every time I see them, I discover new works of art. Funchal is full of food and music events, so it is never really quiet. From the harbour, you can see a sea of lights every night when you look at the villages in the mountains. So far, I have only had good experiences with the local people. Even with the language barrier, a fisherman explained to me, using Google Translate, that he ties his bait with a thin string so that it stays on the hook and does not fall off because of the waves. After that, he happily showed me all the photos of his latest catches. It is nice to see how happy the people are here and how everyone tries to communicate with each other. Even a waiter in a local restaurant tried very hard to ask me in Portuguese if I wanted butter with my bread.
Polish tracks on Madeira
I remembered the images displayed in a web browser depicting an incredibly blue ocean with evergreen mountains. I would never think
Here, people have a good work-life balance, and, as a German, I am not used to how relaxed the Portuguese are. It is so unique for me to go to a fish market before work or to jump into the sea after work. These are all experiences that I will always carry with me.
